Chapter 102: In the Depths of Darkness
: I can see Kisaragi-kun clearly, but the dungeon is pitch black.
: Nope, this is way too much for me.
: This must be a nightmare for anyone with a fear of darkness.
: It's not easy even if you don't have a phobia.
: If you have a fear of darkness or claustrophobia, you probably shouldn't be a dungeon explorer.
: But this isn't just any dungeon—it's a live stream!
I've made it to the 45th floor, and the only light I can see now comes from the sword I'm holding. At this point, no ordinary human could see more than a few centimeters ahead. My sword is glowing like a fluorescent light, but even that's starting to feel insufficient.
Thanks to Tenko's ability, I'm unaffected by the water pressure. Still, I can't even begin to imagine how intense the pressure is at this depth. It's said that at depths of over 200 meters, sunlight only accounts for 0.1% of what reaches the surface. That means here, at the 45th floor, the pressure must be at least 20 atmospheres—roughly 20,000 hectopascals. Hard to really grasp those numbers.
Then again, considering some humans can free-dive over 100 meters, maybe it's not entirely impossible—at least for a few exceptional people.
"Is this still broadcasting...?" .net
: Whoa, Tenko-san just popped up, and I got startled.
: Her beautiful face in close-up is going to give me a heart attack.
: The camera's showing a bit too much beauty, lol.
: Camera-san (cause of underwater mobility).
: Yep, we can see you.
: It's a little dark, but Tenko-san is definitely visible.
"Could you guys stop drooling over someone else's Shikigami in the comments?"
: You're the one who made her beautiful.
: Come on, we're just guys.
: In such a dark and scary place, we're allowed a little bit of comfort, aren't we?
: Exactly!
: More screen time for the beauty, please!
: Kisaragi-kun should take over the camera and focus on Tenko-san.
Sure, I made her beautiful, but who wouldn't want to make something aesthetically pleasing when creating a vessel for a divine being? I mean, I would've been fine with a monstrous form, but since I was summoning something, it felt right to give it a nice appearance... Also, yeah, I admit, as a guy, I thought a beautiful form would be better. Sorry, I'll own up to that.
While I was checking the camera and reading the comments, Sagojo was off doing his thing, swimming around and hunting monsters. I can't see much in this deep-sea environment anymore, so I'm relying on him. It'd be nice if I could somehow share his vision.
"Isn't it possible?"
"Wait, it is?"
"Well... It depends on how you use your powers, doesn't it?"
Maybe I'll give it a shot. Given that I can't see anything down here, it'd be great if sharing Sagojo's vision let me see what he sees. It might be a bit awkward, though, since it's not my own viewpoint.
Since I can communicate with my Shikigami mentally, maybe I can extend that to sharing vision... Can I?
: What's he doing?
: Just move forward already!
: When you go quiet, it's scarier, so say something.
: Don't go silent in the deep sea, please.
: Moving forward might be even scarier, though.
"Oh, I did it."
Not quite, though. Instead of sharing Sagojo's vision, it feels more like I'm sharing his perception. In short, I can now see the world the way Sagojo does.
It feels like an incredibly overpowered ability, but having all this information flooding into my head is nauseating, like wearing glasses with the wrong prescription. I won't be able to maintain this for long. However, it does allow me to quickly get a sense of my surroundings, even if I'm not seeing the bright world I had imagined.
Instead, I'm perceiving things like heat sources or magic signatures—something along those lines.
"This isn't going to work for long, so I'll keep moving by touch. The screen might stay dark, but I'm progressing."
: Aren't you going to map the place out?
"Why would I bother mapping a place no one else can enter? Even if I tried, it's way too dark to make an accurate map."
Mapping out a dungeon sounds nice, but it's not like in games where the layout is neat and organized. I'd have to estimate everything, and in this darkness, it's impossible.
I can sense where Sagojo is since we're connected through magic, so I know roughly where the monsters are. That's good enough.
"'Kijin'."
"Did you call for me, master?"
"Uh... yeah."
It throws me off when she answers so casually like that.
: Oh, she's here again.
: Is this going to be a regular thing?
: Her low energy is kind of unusual.
: Is it because we're underwater?
: Wait, how is Kijin fine underwater?
: She's a Shikigami, duh (probably).
: If Kisaragi-kun's fine, then the Shikigami are fine too.
: Kisaragi-kun is only fine because of his Shikigami, so maybe they're using their powers to survive underwater?
"Still, this is quite the strange dungeon you've entered."
"Could you not call it strange...? Wait, can you see around us?"
"Hmm? The surroundings? Yes, of course."
What? How can she see? Even Sagojo is just following magic traces, yet Kijin can see clearly? But I don't want to borrow her vision again—it makes me feel queasy.
"Support Sagojo, would you?"
"That crocodile with the trident, swimming around wildly?"
"Yeah."
"Tenko, I'll take over guarding our master, so go help that maniac."
"Oh dear... Master, must you summon such a reckless creature?"
: Lol.
: Kijin dishing out insults like it's nothing.
: Isn't Kijin supposed to be the leader of the Twelve Heavenly Generals? Why is she getting roasted?
: Maybe Byakko and Seiryu were also roasting her behind the scenes...
Guys, seriously, get along. You're both my Shikigami, after all.
Kijin, stop complaining and just go help Sagojo. I've got Tenko with me, so I'm good here. Honestly, if I'm going to get support underwater, I'd prefer Tenko anyway, so Kijin, get going.
