Chapter 42 - It’s You!!
Lin Yu nodded and replied, “Yes… there was a vengeful ghost in the elevator that asks for a nether coin, but even if you give it, it’ll claim you didn’t pay with your room card and attack… but it’s not strong.”
There was nothing to hide about the elevator incident, so he told the man, and then asked steadily, “You came down by the stairs. Was there any danger?”
The man with the black knife nodded, saying, “There’s no ‘monitoring’ in the stairwell. According to the ghosts passing by, it’s a ‘lawless zone’ of Beyond Apartments, occupied by six vengeful ghosts led by an evil ghost with a baseball bat. They’ll block you and ask for money to buy cigarettes.
“They’ve also set traps on some of the stair steps, making them very troublesome!”
The man shook his head as he spoke.
“It seems like everything in Beyond Apartments requires ‘ghost currency’ to get through!”
Lin Yu nodded, this wasn’t surprising, as paying the rent was stated as a mission objective.
Of course, Lin Yu had already completed it!
Seeing the man’s frank attitude, Lin Yu reminded him, “The payment center over there can recharge your room card. I went there already. You’ll need at least 500 ghost coins on your card today to avoid certain ‘penalties!’
“A total of 2,500 over three days!
“However, it seems there are ‘job opportunities’ in this building. You can probably earn ghost coins at the information center!”
Hearing this, the man with the knife breathed a sigh of relief.
“500 for today… a total of 2,500. I can manage that!
“But living here, the actual amount is probably more than that, so I’d better deposit a little extra!”
The man with the black knife looked pained.
Lin Yu was somewhat surprised at his reaction.
Even though this man was a fourth-rank ghost controller with a powerful ghost, from what he’d seen at the offline trading fair, he likely counted as a “wealthy man” among fourth-rank ghost controllers!
He could take out over 2,500 ghost coins at once, even if he felt the pinch, and despite looking a bit disheveled, he hadn’t sustained any injuries on his way down the stairs.
This guy clearly had some skill!
With that thought, Lin Yu nodded.
“I’ve already topped up. I don’t mind accompanying you to the payment center again. We can explore this floor together afterward!” Lin Yu offered, and the fourth-rank ghost controller readily agreed.
“Sure! No problem!”
This made Lin Yu warm up to him even more. Considering he himself appeared to be just a first-rank ghost controller, yet the other man didn’t see him as dead weight!
The two of them walked back toward the payment center.
Upon re-entering the room, the man with the knife walked straight to the first counter, slapping his room card on the counter and saying, “Top-up!”
He said it boldly. The paper ghost at the first counter heard his arrogant tone and saw the new, empty room card.
It was about to react aggressively, though it could tell the man was a fourth-rank ghost controller and not an ordinary human.
Still, in Beyond Apartments, money was everything!
Strength mattered, but money ruled!
However, as it looked up, it saw Lin Yu calmly watching, and immediately froze, reining in its arrogance, and respectfully asked the man with the knife, “How much would you like to top up?”
The man with the knife thought for a moment and gave a number.
“2,700 nether coins!”
With that, he took out a dirty cloth bag, from which he pulled out a handful of Yin-energy-infused copper coins.
They were stamped with the words “Bank of Heaven and Earth”… clearly self-issued, with no other branches!
Lin Yu, having read up on ghost currency on the forums, recognized what he saw.
Though ghost currency was rare, some people in the Ghost Realm of the horror game held a portion of it, the biggest difference being that typical ghost currency showed only its face value, with no bank or serial number, and usually its value depreciated due to “yin energy depletion,” which ghosts would point out during transactions.
However, self-issued ghost currency was full value, with no depreciation!
The Yin energy copper coins the man had drawn were dense with yin energy and bore four characters, clearly self-issued!
Seeing this, Lin Yu’s mouth twitched, and he immediately guessed the man’s identity.
Judging by his black-gold knife, his forthright personality, and his status as a fourth-rank ghost controller… he recalled selling two strings of yin-energy copper coins.
This man was almost certainly the Crazy Blade!
